Overview of our War And Peace Private Tour

To accompany the stunning BBC drama 'War and Peace' we have created a beautiful private tour of Lithuania & Latvia visiting some of the main filming locations for 'War and Peace'.

Follow in the footsteps of Lily James, James Norton and Gillian Anderson visiting the locations where they made Tolstoy's classic come to life. This is a relaxed private tour with private guided walking tours, private day trips and transfers, and staying in 4 star accommodation in Vilnius old town, a wonderful Latvian countryside palace, and the heart of Riga old town.

In winter, with a gentle covering of snow, this tour provides a glimpse into a Tolstoy winter, but you'll also enjoy modern comfortable hotels and warm, cosy cafes and restaurants! If you are interested, and weather permits we can also arrange winter activities such as a horse and sleigh ride.

In spring and summer months, this tour has a delightful hum of rural life and a backdrop of pretty countryside dotted with wild flowers.

Itinerary for our War And Peace Private Tour

Our driver will pick you up at Vilnius airport and take you to your 4 star old town hotel. Free time to settle in and explore the beautiful old town.
Accommodation in 4 star old town hotel, Vilnius.

After breakfast, our guide will meet you at the hotel and you will enjoy a 3 hour walking tour of Vilnius, focusing on some of the places used in filming the new BBC 'War and Peace' drama, and of course the main sights of Vilnius. The afternoon is free to explore further, perhaps visit some museums, do some souvenir shopping, or enjoy people-watching in one of the many cafes, bars or restaurants.

Our driver-guide will meet you at the hotel after breakfast and you will enjoy a day trip out of town to visit the majestic Trakai Castle and the delightful outdoor ethnographic museum of 'Rumsiskes' - both were filming locations for 'War and Peace'.

(Please note that in winter Rumsiskes has fewer exhibits open, and can become inaccessible by car if heavy snow. In this instance we would look to arrange a suitable alternative place to visit, or an activity to suit the weather eg a sleigh ride.

Our driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel after breakfast, and you will visit the charming Pushkin Museum on the outskirts of Vilnius old town. The museum was used for filming 'War and Peace' and has an authentic sense of connection to the literary past. After your visit to the Pushkin Museum, you will make a quick stop at Kernave archaeological site where the 'Battle of Borodino' scene was filmed (please note the Pushkin museum is closed on Mondays & Tuesdays and on those days you will have a longer visit to Kernave). You will then continue up to Mezotnes in Latvia, where you will stay for a night at the beautiful Mezotnes Pils, a renovated palace with comfortable 4* hotel rooms. Enjoy relaxing like an aristocrat in this fine setting of beautiful architecture and fine grounds.
Accommodation at the 4* Mezotnes Pils palace hotel.

After your breakfast at Mezotnes Pils, our driver will pick you up and drive you to the nearby historical gem of Rundale Palace. Rundale Palace is not only one of Latvia's top sights to visit, but it was also used for filming in the BBC 'War and Peace' adaptation. Here you can enjoy exploring the impressive palace and gardens, then our driver will take you up to Riga.
Accommodation in Riga 4* old town hotel.

Day 6 RIGA
Our guide will meet you at your hotel after breakfast and take you for a 3 hour walking tour of Riga. Riga is a very different city to Vilnius; much bigger with different architectural influences, and is a delight to explore (especially with a few cosy cafe breaks along the way!) The afternoon is free to explore Riga at your leisure, perhaps visit some museums or attractions.

Day 7 RIGA
Our driver will pick you up from your hotel and drive you to Riga airport for your flight home. End of the tour.

Please note flights are NOT included in this package. We can help you find the best flights to suit you, and if you would like us to book these for you - no problem! Should you need to add EXTRA NIGHTS to suit flight schedules this is possible to arrange. Please call or email us to discuss your plans

Reviews for our War And Peace Private Tour

"Overall, we both very much enjoyed ourselves. Your guides were all very enthusiastic to show us as much as possible and we were very impressed by the amazing advances made post Soviet occupation."
Cheryl and Sue, March 2016

"Blessed with a full week of blue skies/sunshine we had a great trip. All the guides were excellent – Linas especially... Rundale Palace was simply amazing. And I got several hundred new good pics for my travel talks –so overall a really good result and we’d certainly travel with Baltic Holidays again!"
Mr & Mrs Whittle, May 2016

"Want to record the appreciation of my wife Julia and me to you and the team at Baltic Holidays for an excellent week based on some of the "War and Peace" filming sites. Organisation was slick, the driver/guides very informative and helpful (particularly Linas) and good service and facilities in the hotels."
Mr Spinks, September 2016

"We had a thoroughly enjoyable time seeing things we would not have thought about at the beginning of the year. It was also helped by the knowledge and patience of our guides."
Mr & Mrs Morris, September 2016

"That was the most marvellous holiday, absolutely inspirational, and we are immensely grateful to you both. To you, Jurga, for always answering my emails so kindly and to Linas for being the most perfect travelling companion. For telling us so much and for taking so much trouble to find the War and Peace sites. We shall watch the series again and “ooh” and “aah” when we recognise where we are!"
Mr & Mrs Marsh, December 2016
