The Baltics have some beautiful countryside, with an abundance of wildlife and nature. Fields full of flowers, meadows, national parks, small market villages with historic castles, wooden houses nestled by streams and rivers, forests where the locals forage for mushrooms, you really feel like you are far from the hustle and bustle of urban life.
Explore the Baltic Countryside
An excellent way to explore the Baltics is to spend a few days in the cities, then hire a car and head off for the countryside. You will get off the beaten tourist track and really see a different side to the countries. We are pleased to offer a wide selection of country cottages throughout Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania all of which are of a suitable standard to enjoy a relaxing stay. They range from self-catering to B&B guesthouses and have different facilities depending on their location.

The Lithuanian countryside is very pretty and there are five national parks for you to explore.
Latvian Countryside
Latvia has many countryside gems to discover.
Sigulda is a lovely district in the Latvian countryside is around a one hour's drive from Riga, its often referred to as Latvia's 'Little Switzerland' due to its hilly landscape, the rest of the Baltic's are, in comparison, very flat so this area is refreshing and different. This area is also home to the charming Gauja River that flows through the Gauja National Park, this beautiful park is a great place to relax and explore. For the more adventurous it is possible to canoe on the river and is ideal for beginners.
Sigulda is a historic town dominated by its Castle ruins. There is a cable car offering stunning views of the Gauja Valley, and this area is particularly beautiful in the autumn as the tree's become a haze of burnt oranges and gold's.
Cesis is a pretty castle town close by, and a lovely place to visit. With an ancient old town and market square, it is an idea base for walkers and lovers of history, wishing to explore the area and take advantage of the many nature trails.
Estonian Coutryside
Estonia has some beautiful countryside. In particular The Soomaa National Park, covering 400km is well worth a visit. It feels very mystical and magical here, in the evening mist hovers over fields full of flowers; meadows glisten and small wooden houses nestle by rivers and streams. Beavers swim in the reeds and the park is home to wolfs, lynx and brown bears.
There are 5 bogs separated by woodlands and rivers. During the snow melting period this area becomes flooded, locals call this the 'fifth season'. It's a very beautiful park and a wonderful place to explore.
The Ammende Villa in Parnu offers a great base from which to explore The Sooma National Park and the Villa offers a wonderful trip 'Canoeing by Moonlight', you canoe 7 km down one of the rivers, it's a magical way to experience Sooma's beautiful nature, and one of the best trips we have ever done. You finish at a wooden house and enjoy a picnic by a roaring fire. Highly recommended.
You can visit Craters made by meteorites in IIumetsa and Sandstone manmade mining caves at Piusa, both in south-east Estonia. The mines closed in 1979, and then the bats moved in! Today it is the largest wintering colony of bats in Northern Europe.
