My father left a region of Lithuania called Pogegan, in the 1940s, he was only nine years old and they fled to escape the invading Bolsheviks. I first visited in 1999; I wanted to discover the land my father was from, and to learn more about my own heritage. Visiting the house where my father was born, and from which he left in such turmoil, was an emotional and an unforgettable experience.
A Turbulent History.....
The Baltic region has endured many invasions and occupations, the effect of this turbulent time has caused many Lithuanian's, Latvians and Estonia's to be displaced, having to settle in far-flung parts of the world to raise their own families. Since the Baltic countries gained independence from the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, it has been possible for people to return and re-discover their roots.
Meeting long lost relative....
A number of our clients have visited the country of their parents or grandparents, some have even found lost relatives, and many of the stories we have heard have been very moving.
A helping hand...
If you need a helping hand looking for your family we have a really good team in the Baltics who are very willing to do the research for you. They can prepare in advance of your visit so that your time in the region will be most productive and once you've arrived they can accompany you to the national archives or take you to your family village or city.
If you would prefer, you can of course book a basic package with us, we can source accommodation near your family village or town, and you can trace your family at your own pace.
It is an interesting and moving experience, believe me you won't regret it.
