During Soviet Times....
During Soviet times the USSR had a formidable reputation for having some of the most talented ballet dancers and musicians in the world. Many of the artists were not only Russian but came all from all over Eastern Europe. Indeed Mikhail Baryshnikov, whom Time magazine has called "the greatest living dancer" was born in Riga, Latvia.
Today...
Today these countries give tourists a chance to see some outstanding performances for exceptionally good value in some beautiful theatres. To sit in one of the best seats in the house in London's Covent Garden Opera House will cost in the region of £200, you will pay around £30 for a similar seat in the Baltics.
The Mariinsky Theatre
The Mariinsky theatre, build in 1859, in St Petersburg is the home of the world famous Kirov Ballet. Many famous dancers through out history have danced on this stage and it is a centre of excellence. An evening here is an experience in itself and we would say for ballet lovers no visit to St Petersburg is complete without it. Tickets here are more expensive than the Baltics, around £50 -£75, however for the quality of production and sheer magnificence of the theatre, remains remarkable value for money.
If you would like to see more ballet and opera but have had to ration your visits or if you have been put off by expensive UK prices then this is a wonderful opportunity to see some world class performances, without blowing the budget!
