FROM THE BALTIC TO THE BLACK SEA
Itinerary for The Grand Baltic Private Tour

The Grand Baltic Private Tour

Our Grand Baltic Private Tour, takes you to the Baltic capitals of Vilnius, Riga & Tallinn, and on to Helsinki & St Petersburg. It is a perfect mix of beautiful cities and impressive sights out of town.

Starting in the south in the charming Baroque capital of Lithuania; Vilnius, you then travel up to Bauska in Latvia where you overnight in a manor house and visit the famous Rundale Palace. On to Riga, capital of Latvia, where you find a stunning mix of architecture, history and culture. Next you travel up to Estonia, but not without visiting the open air museum of Latvia and a Soviet bunker on the way! Spend time in Tartu, a pretty university town, before you take the 'onion road' to Tallinn - medieval Tallinn, the Estonian fairytale capital. Having experienced the three Baltic States capitals, it is time for a Nordic experience! Taking the Hydrofoil over to Helsinki in Finland, enjoy a couple of days in Helsinki, before boarding the comfortable train to St Petersburg. Majestic St Petersburg, the imperial heart of Russia is on a much grander scale than the other cities you will visit. We have included the highlights of St Petersburg in excursions and walking tours, to give you the best introduction to St Petersburg.

This tour offers a wonderfully interesting, cultural, and inspiring holiday with a mix of free time and the company and support of your own personal guides and drivers.

Day 1 - VILNIUS

Our driver will meet you in the arrivals hall and drive you to your hotel (they will be holding a sign with your name on it).

Day 2 - VILNIUS

Vilnius Walking Tour With Private Guide (3 Hours)
Our English speaking guide will meet you in your hotel reception and take you for a 3 hour privately guided walking tour of Vilnius. This is a great way to get your bearings on your first day and see all the major sights of the city, making deciding what to visit and see in more detail a lot easier. If you like to try the local food where the locals eat - we recommend you ask your guide to finish your tour at an authentic Lithuanian restaurant where the food is delicious and good value for money. If you don't fancy walking for 3 hours, you are very welcome to stop at one of the many cafes in the old town and chat with your guide about life in Lithuania, what to see etc and pick up some local tips. This 'stopping time' is part of your 3 hours so make the most of their company and local knowledge!

Day 3 - VILNIUS

Trakai Castle & Grutas Park Private Day Trip
This enjoyable day trip visits two of Lithuanias unique sights in the company of our friendly English speaking driver. Grutas Park Soviet Sculpture Park has grown from strength to strength since we first visited. The local 'mushroom millionaire' bought up many of the old discarded Soviet statues that people were happy to see torn down from town squares across Lithuania, and parked them up here anticipating that one day they'd come in handy... and they did! Grutas Park is a museum of Soviet sculptures, where Stalin and Lenin can be sat upon for photos, and the exhibition has developed with many more interesting attractions to keep you entertained. Trakai Castle is a stunning island castle; walk out across the wooden bridges and explore the inner courtyard and exhibitions, before returning to the mainland and wandering the picturesque streets of Trakai village with its wooden houses and try a local 'kibinai'... look back to view Trakai Castle in all its splendour, a truly iconic Lithuanian view. The day trip starts with our driver picking you up at your hotel at 10.00 and you will return to Vilnius approximately 18.30. Lunch is available at the restaurant at Grutas Park (not everything has mushrooms!) but this is not included. The tour goes at your pace and if you need to stop our driver will be happy to do so.

Here you will take a cable car across the valley to visit Turaida. Turaida: in the language of the ancient Livs, Turaida means 'Garden of God'. Everybody who arrives in Turaida is convinced of the harmony of nature and creative work of man. Cesis: a typical European medieval town, with a Latvian twist, and a medieval castle.

After this you will drive on to Ligatne where you will experience a Soviet bunker. The main purpose of the bunker - hidden beneath a hotel - was for KGB and high ranking communist officials to hide after a nuclear attack. The bunker was only declassified and made known to the general Latvian public in 2003. You'll have a bite to eat in the Soviet canteen (circa 1980s) before you tour around the bunker. Today the collection totals three million works of art: 15,000 paintings (by Titian, Rembrandt, Picasso, Matisse, Leonardo da Vinci and many others) 12,000 sculptures, 600,000 drawings, 224,000 objects of applied art and many other interesting things that are placed in 1,057 halls and rooms of the former Royal Palace. Stand in front of each piece for one minute and it would take you from 3 to 11 years to get round everything (every staff member tells this differently).
Duration: 2,5-3hours. Public transport included where required.

Day 17 - ST PETERSBURG

St Petersburg Peterhof Tour (4 Hours)
Versailles was the inspiration behind Peter the Great’s desire to build an imperial palace in the suburbs of his new city St Petersburg. The palace, park and the famous system of fountains, including the truly spectacular Grand Cascade were later extended by Peter’s granddaughter, Empress Elizabeth, who loved the place just as much as he did. Catherine the Great moved the court to Pushkin but, afterwards, Nicholas I ordered the building of the modest Cottage Palace in 1826, meaning that Peterhof was once again the Official Imperial Residence and so the park was continually undergoing improvements in the 18th and 19th centuries. During the Second World War, Peterhof was ravaged by German troops like almost all of St. Petersburg’s suburban estates. However, it was one of the first to be resurrected and the estate was almost fully restored by 1947 thanks to the work of military engineers and over one thousand volunteers. The original name of Peterhof was replaced with ‘Petrodvorets’ so that it did not sound German and this is the name still given to the surrounding town, although the palace and park are now known as Peterhof once again. Mode of transport: by car & walking

Day 18 - ST PETERSBURG

St Petersburg Tsarskoye Selo (Catherine's Palace With Amber Room)

Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, who was the architect behind the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, built this palace for the Empress Elizabeth. It is Tsarskoye Selo’s top attraction and particularly famous for its beautiful Amber Room. Less well known, and much more dilapidated, the Alexander Palace is nonetheless also a neoclassical masterpiece, and has a particularly poignant connection with the family of the last Tsar, Nicholas II. The town of Pushkin, which surrounds the Tsarskoye Selo’s estate, was bestowed with this name in Soviet times to honour Russia’s greatest poet, and is St. Petersburg’s most charming suburb. Pushkin has numerous sights connected with Alexander Sergeevich such as a museum in the former Imperial Lycee, where he was schooled. Mode of transport: by car, walking.

THANK YOU FOR ONE OF THE BEST HOLIDAYS WE HAVE EVER HAD (AND WE HAVE HAD A FEW!)

Thank you so much for putting together a top notch experience. Please can you pass on our appreciation to Jurga too. Everything went smoothly. The itinerary was spot on, there was something fantastic to see on the days we were on the move and we never felt the journeys were too long. Thank you for one of the best holidays we have ever had (and we have had a few!)

HEMSLEY GROUP, TAILOR MADE SELF-DRIVE TOUR OF THE BALTICS, MAY 2018

THE STAFF AT BALTIC HOLIDAYS ARE PROFESSIONAL, KNOWLEDGEABLE AND EXCEEDINGLY FLEXIBLE

My husband and I worked with the exceptional staff at Baltic Holidays to plan two remarkable tailor-made vacations: One to Russia, Finland and Estonia, the other to Eastern Europe visiting Bucharest, Budapest and Prague. The accommodations were perfect and located in convenient places in the cities we visited. The guides we had for day trips both in and out of the cities were knowledgeable, smart and each and everyone went out of their way to make our visit wonderful. We were warmly greeted at the airport and bus stations with staff that took us to our hotels and delivered us back on time and in comfort. Baltic Holidays went the extra mile to help us get tickets to concerts, operas and even the Moscow Circus. But best of all the staff at Baltic Holidays are professional, knowledgeable and exceedingly flexible. We spend lots of time communicating on e-mail about different trip options until we got our plans just right. We feel like the staff are friends now and look forward to working with them again on our next adventure.

THE EXPERTS FOR A TAILOR MADE TRIP TO THIS FASCINATING PART OF THE WORLD

Baltic Holidays did a first class job for us from start to finish. The care and attention with which they planned the trip was outstanding. They were highly flexible to our professional photography needs. Each of the guides went beyond the call of duty in helping us and we saw some extraordinary off the beaten track events and people. They are the experts for a tailor made trip to this fascinating part of the world.

MR J STRACHAN, TAILOR-MADE PHOTOGRAPHY TOUR OF THE BALTIC STATES, JULY 2017

HATS OFF TO BALTIC HOLIDAYS. YOU GAVE US A TRIP OF A LIFETIME.

Our trip was superb, Philip. As you well know, before the trip I customized it quite a bit. Your team was terrific in accommodating that customization. The result was a unique and spectacular trip. I could go on at great length to tell you how much we enjoyed this trip but, instead, will save time by simply telling you that Denise and I have traveled quite extensively and we both agreed that this was one of our favorite trips ever. That is in large part due to your team's hard work before we landed and once we were "in country." The Baltics trip was the first time that we traveled on our own but used a tour company to help plan and then fully support the trip. You have now spoiled - and ruined - us. Hats off to Baltic Holidays. You gave us a trip of a lifetime.

WE HAVE LEARNT SO MUCH ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE FIVE COUNTRIES

Dear Jurga, We arrived home safe and sound on Saturday afternoon and, now, our minds are full of wonderful memories of a very enjoyable trip. Thank you very much for organising such a comprehensive holiday for us. Everything went like clockwork: guides were excellent, erudite and solicitous and good travelling companions, excellent selection of hotels -a faultless holiday. We have learnt so much about the history of the five countries and have met many friendly and welcoming people. Once again thank you for all your work.

MR CYSTER, GRAND BALTIC PRIVATE TOUR (VILNIUS, RIGA, TALLINN, HELSINKI, ST PETERSBURG, MOSCOW), SEPTEMBER 2017

WE WILL CERTAINLY BE BOOKING THROUGH BALTIC HOLIDAYS AGAIN

We had the most wonderful holiday. It was brilliantly organised for us from start to finish. What can I say - we loved everything! It's not easy to meet the needs of 6 people ages 14 and up, but our holiday did just that. All the accommodation was wonderful... The trips were fantastic. I was a little unsure what we would get from a walking tour in Vilnius as I'd seen some of the main sights on my last visit, but it was great! The rest of our daytrips, including visits to Trakai, Hill of Crosses, and the Curonian Spit were with Linas, our lovely guide. We were so well looked after. He did everything possible give us a good experience of the country, especially when we took a day trip to the region where our family used to live, helping us to explore our connections to the area. The only problem with the trip is that it has left us so desperately wanting to return to Lithuania again - there is still so much to see and explore! It may take a little while to get back there but we will certainly be booking through Baltic Holidays again when we do. Sending best wishes to all of the lovely Baltic Holidays team, and thank you for a truly memorable holiday.

WE HAD AN ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL TIME.

We had an absolutely wonderful time. It exceeded our expectations, helped by good weather and the absence of crowds. I'mso glad I read that article in The Guardian which prompted me to call you. We particularly loved the day in the canoe and on the bog, the cookery class, the lovely guide in Tallinn and being left on our own to walk and cycle. Thank you all so much!

BALTIC HOLIDAYS MET EVERY NEED AND EXPECTATION!

We enjoy the ease of first-class packaged holidays but prefer traveling independently and on our own agenda with assistance as required. In this regard Baltic Holidays met every need and expectation! Once we set our desireddestinations and dates, Baltic Holidays put together the most suitable hotels, booked expert drivers, and arranged for top notch guides in each city. Everything worked like clockwork. We were able to sit back and enjoy the trip without ever worrying about transportation, payments, or hotel arrangements.

THE ORGANISATION WAS OUTSTANDING

We want to say how much we enjoyed the whole trip. The organisation was outstanding and everything went just as was planned.Of course being our first visit, everything we saw was a completely new experienceso we have many happy memories to look back on, with each capital city quite different to the other two, as we found when going to Riga from Vilnius and then to Tallin. Tartu was a charming little town too and we were glad we included a cross-country trip. The hotels were excellent and overall there is nothing at all we could suggest needed improvement. We are so glad and grateful that we were finally able to make the trip after the disappointment in April. Our sincere thanks to everyone who was involved in providing us with a truly memorable experience.

FIRST TIME WE HAVE USED A HOLIDAY COMPANY

We would like to thank you both for organising our recent short break in Riga. Everything worked perfectly from the moment we were met at the airport to when we were driven back to the airport at the end. It was the first time we have used a holiday company – we usually book our hotels and flights ourselves – but we are very glad that we did. We have been telling our friends about our good experience with Baltic Holidays, so hopefully you might get some more bookings! Thank you once again – and please thank Inga and Aldis for making our holiday so much better.

We also appreciated that there is a company that offers tours in this part of the world during a time of the year when a lot of other companies don't offer any options.

MOSCOW & ST PETERSBURG PRIVATE TOUR

I wanted to let you know how nicely everything worked out. We will have a hard time deciding between Moscow and St Petersburg. Which one will we like better? Who knows. This is a really great trip and we want to thank you again!

MORE LIKE A FRIEND THAN A GUIDE

The organisation of our trip was very professional and ran like clockwork. It was great to have everything organised and to not worry about driving or finding places of interest. We met some lovely tour guides especially Vicky in Palanga who was a fantastic host and felt more like a friend than a guide. We were pleasantly impressed by the standards of Eastern Europe and enjoyed the food and reasonable prices too. We would definitely recommend the baltics to our friends. In fact our 22 year old son said we could even leave him in Lithuania!

GREAT TO KNOW WE COULD CONTACT JURGA AT ANY TIME

Thanks we had a great trip, the hotels you picked for us were lovely, good locations and interesting buildings. The guide in Helsinki was really nice and took us to some places that we would not have thought of, including the university library building. Most of all it was great to know we could contact Jurga at any time so I would like to especially thank her for her help.

VERY HAPPY WITH THE WAY YOU HAD ORGANISED OUR HOLIDAY

Dear Sarah, We really enjoyed ourselves. Helsinki and Tallinn are both great places to visit in very different ways. We loved the laid back atmosphere in Helsinki and walking by the sea right by the city centre. Tallinn is stunningly beautiful. Every corner you go round brings another amazing view. We were very happy with the way you had organised our holiday. The hotels were both excellent and all the pick ups were right on time. All in all we had a great time and enjoyed it from start to finish.
